Building Demolition in Murphy, NC

Building Demolition · Murphy, NC

Old barns and outbuildings torn down and hauled off

An old barn leans a little more every year. A garage roof gives way, or an old store sits empty in town. Sanders Contracting handles building demolition for jobs like these around Murphy and the tri-state area. The excavator takes the building down and the dump truck hauls it off.

We are a demolition contractor based in Murphy, with a large excavator and a small one. Shed removal is often a short job. A big barn full of old equipment takes longer. Tearing down a whole house is its own service, covered under house demolition.

What We Handle

  • Old barns taken down with the excavator, leaning ones included
  • Detached garages and carports torn down and hauled off
  • Shed removal for backyard sheds and small outbuildings
  • Old stores and small commercial buildings demolished
  • Collapsed and storm damaged buildings taken down from the outside
  • A small excavator for tight spots and steep lots
  • Debris loaded into the dump truck and hauled off
  • The spot cleaned up and ready for what comes next

Shed removal and barn demolition with an excavator

Most outbuildings come down the same way. The excavator works from the outside and pulls the roof and walls in toward the middle. Then it loads the pile into the dump truck, and the debris is hauled off.

The large excavator handles a big barn or a block store building. The small one fits behind a house or down a narrow drive. On a steep mountain lot, the small machine can often reach a building the big one cannot.

A barn that is already falling in comes down the same way, from the outside. After Helene in September 2024, Cherokee County was one of the counties in the federal disaster declaration. Storm damaged barns and sheds are part of this work.

What has to happen before a building comes down in North Carolina?

In North Carolina, a demolition permit comes from the county or town inspections office. Whether your barn or shed needs one is that office's call, so ask before the work starts. In Cherokee County, the county's Office of Building Code Enforcement takes permit applications.

Old cement siding and some older roofing can hold asbestos. A store or another commercial building needs an asbestos inspection first, done by an inspector accredited by the state. The state's Health Hazards Control Unit also wants a demolition notice at least 10 working days ahead, asbestos or not. For a home's barn or garage, the state still recommends that inspection.

If the building has power, it has to be off first, and you set that up with your power company. State law treats demolition like digging, so NC 811 gets notice at least three full working days ahead. A buried line from the house to a barn or garage is private, so 811 locators leave it unmarked. Show us where that line runs before the work starts.

Commercial demolition around Murphy and the tri-state area

Old stores and small commercial buildings come down with the same excavator and dump truck. Bigger commercial tear-down jobs we talk through case by case. Interior strip-outs, where the building stays standing, are not part of this service.

Our service area runs about 100 miles out from Murphy. In North Carolina, that takes in towns like Andrews, Hayesville, Robbinsville and Bryson City. Wherever the building stands, we look at it first and put the quote in writing.

Once the building is gone, the spot is cleaned up and ready for what comes next. If a new shop or a house pad goes there, that is site development, and we do that work too.

FAQ

Building Demolition Questions, Answered

Common questions about building demolition around Murphy and the rest of the tri-state area. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (828) 342-1467

What does it cost to tear down an old barn or shed?
Size drives most of it, along with what the building is made of. A slab underneath or a steep, tight spot for the machine adds work. We look at the job and put the quote in writing. Call or text (828) 342-1467 to set that up.
Do I need to empty the building before it comes down?
Yes. Take out anything you want to keep, because whatever is left inside goes out with the debris. Fuel cans and paint need to come out too. If the building is still full, tell us when we look at the job.
Can you take down a detached garage that sits close to the house?
Usually, yes. The small excavator works in tight spots and can pull the building away from the house as it comes down. We look at the spacing when we come out to quote the job.
What happens to the slab under a garage or shed?
Some sheds sit on blocks or skids and leave bare ground. A garage or an old store usually sits on a slab or footings. Breaking that out and hauling it off is concrete removal, and we can quote it with the tear-down.
The old barn is grown up in brush. Can that go too?
Yes. Brush and small trees around a building can come out on the same visit. If more of the property has grown in, that is land clearing, and one written quote can cover both.
Do you work in Georgia and Tennessee?
Yes. Murphy sits close to both state lines, and our work crosses them. That includes Blairsville and Ellijay in north Georgia, and Copperhill and Ducktown in east Tennessee. Call or text (828) 342-1467 to check a location further out.
