Concrete Removal · Murphy, NC

Old concrete broken out and hauled away

Concrete removal takes an old slab or driveway out of the way. Sometimes the concrete is cracked and breaking up. Sometimes the building that stood on it is gone, or a new house needs the spot. We break the concrete out with the excavator and haul the pieces off in the dump truck.

Sanders Contracting is a demolition contractor based in Murphy, and concrete is part of what we tear out. We take out slabs, old foundations and footings, driveways, patios, sidewalks, block walls and piers. Our work runs across the tri-state area where North Carolina meets Georgia and Tennessee. Call or text (828) 342-1467, and we look at the job and put the quote in writing.

Slab and foundation removal after the building is gone

A slab often outlasts the house or the barn that stood on it. Old foundations and footings stay in the ground too. They get in the way when a new house is planned for the same spot.

The excavator breaks the slab or the foundation into pieces and loads them into the dump truck. Rebar or wire mesh inside holds the pieces together and takes more work to break apart. Thick footings and old block walls come out the same way.

If a building still stands on the slab, it comes down first. A standing garage or barn is building demolition work. Once it is down, the slab and the footings can come out next.

Driveway removal on steep lots around Murphy

On a mountain lot, the driveway often climbs from the road to the house. An old concrete drive there may be cracked and sinking at the edges. The dump truck has to get up and down that slope with every load, so access shapes the job.

The large excavator breaks out long runs of driveway. The small one works in close, where a patio or a walk meets the house. The broken pieces go into the dump truck and leave the site.

Where a driveway meets a state-maintained road like US 64, its end can sit in the right-of-way. Ask the local NCDOT district engineer about that strip before it comes out.

Can broken concrete stay on your land in North Carolina?

Sometimes, under narrow conditions. The state's solid waste rules count cured concrete, block, brick and rock as inert debris. Concrete with lead-based paint or chemical sealants on it falls outside that group.

The state's beneficial fill rule lets that debris level ground without a solid waste permit, if it meets every condition. A hole dug just to bury the pieces does not qualify. The fill needs at least one foot of compacted soil on top. It also has to stay out of creeks and other state waters, and above the seasonal high groundwater table.

County and town rules can add to the state rule, so ask your county first. On our concrete removal jobs, the broken pieces leave the site in the dump truck.

FAQ

Concrete Removal Questions, Answered

Common questions about concrete removal around Murphy and the rest of the tri-state area. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (828) 342-1467

How much does concrete removal cost?
The price comes from the concrete and the ground around it. Size and thickness come first, then any rebar or wire mesh inside. A steep or tight lot and the number of dump truck loads matter too. We look at the job and put the quote in writing.
Does concrete removal need an 811 notice first?
Yes. State law calls for notice to NC 811 at least three full working days before an excavation or demolition starts. Weekends and state holidays do not count as working days. NC 811 leaves private lines unmarked, so point out any water line or power line under the slab.
Do you pour the new slab or driveway?
Our part is breaking out the old concrete and hauling it off. A concrete contractor pours the new slab or drive. If the spot needs a house pad or a driveway cut in first, that is site development work we do.
Is concrete removal its own job or part of a teardown?
It can be either one. An old driveway or patio can come out on its own. After a house demolition, the slab or the foundation can come out too. Either way, the broken concrete goes out in our dump truck.
Do you take out old block walls and piers?
Yes. Old block walls come down with the excavator. So do the block piers left from a porch or an old mobile home. The footings under them can come out too, and the broken block rides out in the dump truck.
Do you remove concrete outside Murphy?
Yes. Our work covers western North Carolina, including Andrews, Hayesville, Franklin and Sylva. Over the state lines, it reaches Blue Ridge and Blairsville in Georgia, plus Copperhill and Ducktown in Tennessee. See the towns we serve for the full list.
