Trees taken down with the excavator and hauled off

Sanders Contracting does tree removal in Murphy and across the tri-state area where North Carolina meets Georgia and Tennessee. We take down dead and leaning trees, and healthy trees that grew too close to the house. We also trim and prune limbs on the trees you keep. When a storm drops trees across the driveway, we do the storm cleanup.

Our tree service runs on excavators and a dump truck, so the tree comes down and leaves the lot in one job. When trees are cleared for a new house, site development is the next step.

What We Handle

  • Leaning and unwanted trees brought down with the excavator
  • Healthy trees taken down when they grow too close to the house
  • Trimming and pruning on the trees you keep

  • Dead hemlocks and other hazardous trees taken down

How Does Tree Removal With an Excavator Work?

We look at the tree before we quote. The lean matters, and so does what sits under the tree. The excavator needs room to reach the trunk and a clear spot to lay the tree down.

The excavator brings the tree down where there is room for it. We cut the tree up, and the dump truck hauls the wood and brush away. The large excavator handles big trunks, and the small one fits tighter yards.

If you want the stump out too, that work goes with land clearing. We can put the tree and the stump in one written quote.

Storm Cleanup in Murphy and Western North Carolina

In late September 2024, Hurricane Helene's wind reached western North Carolina after two days of heavy rain. That rain loosened the soil and left shallow-rooted trees unstable in the wind, the state climate office reports. FEMA's disaster declaration for Helene included Cherokee County. The state forest service estimated that about 822,000 acres of North Carolina timberland took damage.

Storm cleanup starts with the trees across the driveway and the limbs down in the yard. We cut them up and haul it all off in the dump truck. When the storm leaves more than trees behind, such as a crushed shed, our storm debris removal covers the hauling.

When Is a Tree a Hazardous Tree?

The extension service lists the signs to watch. A leaning tree deserves a closer look, and so does a trunk with cavities or hollow spots. Decay from insects or disease can weaken the wood, and shallow or soaked soil gives roots a weak hold.

After a storm, the guide says large leaning trees should come down. So should trees with more than half the canopy damaged. Helene also left hidden damage: wood can split and roots can break, even on trees that stayed standing. The extension service warns that trees that survived Helene may be more likely to blow over in mild winds.

The hemlock woolly adelgid is a small insect that kills hemlocks. The state forest service reports that it now infests the whole native range of hemlock in North Carolina. A U.S. Forest Service study gave hemlocks about even odds of living 12 years after the insect reached their county. A dead hemlock within reach of the house or the driveway is a hazardous tree, and we take those down.

FAQ

Tree Removal Questions, Answered

Common questions about tree removal around Murphy and the rest of the tri-state area. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (828) 342-1467

How much does tree removal cost?
The price depends on the size of the tree and on what sits under it. The room for the excavator matters, and so does how much wood the dump truck hauls off. Our guide to tree removal cost in North Carolina lists the market ranges. We look at the job and put the quote in writing. Call or text (828) 342-1467 to get started.
Can you take down a tree that leans toward the house?
Often, yes, if the excavator can reach the trunk and bring the tree down away from the house. A tall tree over the roof with no room to fall may need a climber or a crane instead. We tell you up front when a tree needs that kind of work.
Do you trim and prune trees that are staying?
Yes, we trim and prune limbs over the roof or the driveway on the trees you keep. The extension service says to make the final cut just outside the branch collar. It also says never to top a tree. Topping leaves stubs that sprout weakly attached branches, and later storms are likely to damage them.
What should I do first when a storm drops a tree?
Check for downed power lines first, as the extension service advises. Stay clear of any line a tree has pulled down, and call the power company. The same guide warns that bent limbs under tension can spring back without warning. Then call or text us about the cleanup.
Do you haul the wood away?
Yes. We cut the tree up, and the dump truck takes the wood and brush off the property. The written quote spells out what leaves the lot, so you know before the work starts.
Do you do tree removal outside Murphy?
Yes. We are based in Murphy and work across western North Carolina, out to Waynesville and Brevard. Our tri-state area also takes in north Georgia towns like Blue Ridge and east Tennessee towns like Copperhill. See the towns we serve for the full list.
