House Demolition in Murphy, NC

House Demolition · Murphy, NC

Houses and cabins torn down and hauled away

House demolition takes a house off the lot so the ground can be used again. Some houses are past fixing, and some were hurt by fire or a storm. Other owners want the old house gone so a new home can go up in its place.

Sanders Contracting is a demolition contractor in Murphy, NC. We tear down houses and cabins across the tri-state area where North Carolina meets Georgia and Tennessee. A large excavator and a small one do the teardown. The debris rides out on our dump truck.

What has to happen before you demolish a house?

North Carolina law lists demolition among the work that needs a permit from the local inspections department. In Cherokee County, the county's Building Code Enforcement office takes permit applications. Elsewhere, ask the inspections office for the county or town where the house sits.

The Health Hazards Control Unit at NC DHHS recommends an asbestos inspection before any house comes down. An asbestos inspector accredited by the state has to do it. Vinyl flooring, plaster, joint compound and cement siding are among the materials known to hold asbestos. If it turns up, ask that office who may remove it before the teardown.

Every utility service has to be off before work starts, and you arrange those shutoffs with each provider. If the house runs on propane, call the supplier about the tank as well. NC 811 marks public lines only, so show us where the well line and the septic tank sit. An old well or septic tank left on the lot is a question for the county health department.

Home demolition on mountain lots around Murphy

In the mountains around Murphy, a lot can be steep, with a narrow drive and trees close to the house. The large excavator pulls the house down and loads the dump truck. The small one works in close, near trees and any buildings you are keeping.

Old cabins and houses that have sat empty a long time come down the same way. Porches and decks go with the house. The excavator takes the house apart and sets the debris straight into the dump truck. Load by load, the house leaves the lot.

What happens to the foundation and the lot after a teardown?

Some jobs stop at the top of the foundation, and some take the foundation out too. When the slab or the foundation walls have to go, the excavator breaks them out. The pieces go out on the dump truck with the rest.

An old driveway or patio can come out on the same job, and our concrete removal page covers that work. A detached garage or shed on the lot falls under building demolition.

We leave the lot cleaned up and ready for what comes next. When a new home is going up, site development picks up from there with the house pad and the drive.

FAQ

House Demolition Questions, Answered

Common questions about house demolition around Murphy and the rest of the tri-state area. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (828) 342-1467

How much does it cost to demolish a house?
The price turns on the size of the house and what it is built of. Whether the foundation comes out matters, and so does access on a steep lot. How far the debris travels counts too. We look at the job and put the quote in writing before any work starts.
Can you tear down a house that burned or was hit by a storm?
Yes. Fire and storm damaged houses come down with the excavator working from outside the frame. If an insurance claim is open, talk to your adjuster before anything comes down. The debris goes out on our dump truck, and the lot is left clean.
Do you tear down mobile homes too?
Yes. Single wides and double wides have their own page under mobile home demolition. It covers the pad and the old block piers, plus the lot after the home is gone.
Do you tear down houses outside Murphy?
Yes. We work across western North Carolina, including Andrews, Hayesville, Franklin and Sylva. Over the state lines, the work reaches Blue Ridge and Blairsville in Georgia and Copperhill in Tennessee. Call or text (828) 342-1467 to ask about your town.
Can a new house go on the old foundation?
Sometimes, and your builder or an engineer makes that call. If the foundation stays, we take the house down to it and leave it in place. If it goes, it comes out with the rest of the house. Tell us which way you want it, and the written quote spells it out.
Do the buried utility lines get marked first?
Yes. State law calls for a notice to NC 811 at least three full working days before a demolition. The utilities then mark their lines, and they get time to pull or protect their service before the teardown.
