Brush and stumps pulled with excavators and hauled away

Land clearing opens up an overgrown lot or a stretch of acreage so you can use the ground. Sanders Contracting clears brush and small trees with excavators, then pulls the stumps. Our dump truck hauls the debris off the property. Land clearing is one of our main lines of work as a demolition contractor in Murphy, North Carolina.

Tell us what the land is for, and we clear it to fit. It might be a new house, a driveway, a pasture or a view. For a house, our site development work cuts the pad and the driveway once the lot is clear. Call or text (828) 342-1467, and we look at the land and put the quote in writing.

Lot Clearing for a New House in Western North Carolina

A wooded mountain lot has to be opened up before a house can go on it. Clearing usually starts at the road and follows the driveway route up to the house site. Have the house corners and the driveway line staked, and we clear inside the stakes.

Around the house site, we clear working room for the trucks that come later. The brush and stumps all leave in the dump truck. The lot is then ready for the house pad and the driveway cut.

If an old shed or cabin sits on the lot, we can tear it down first. Its debris rides off in the same dump truck.

How Does Stump Removal Work With an Excavator?

Stump removal starts with the bucket. The excavator digs around the stump to loosen it, then lifts it out with the root ball. The large excavator handles the big stumps, and the small one works in tight spots.

On a house site, every stump under the pad and the driveway comes out. The state's erosion control manual says ground that will take fill gets cleared of trees and roots first. Its list of what stays out of fill includes logs and stumps.

Old stumps in a yard or a pasture come out the same way. We fill the holes back in, and the stumps leave in the dump truck.

Brush Removal for Pasture or a View Around Murphy

On mountain land, brush removal can mean rhododendron and mountain laurel. The extension service lists mountain slopes among mountain laurel's homes and calls it a dense shrub. The same service says great rhododendron is concentrated in the southern Appalachians and has shallow roots. Our excavators dig these shrubs out by the roots, along with briars and saplings.

For pasture, we clear the ground and pull the stumps so a mower can run over it. For a view, we clear the brush and small trees on the slope below the house. Large trees, or trees close to a house, are tree removal work.

The same erosion control manual says stripping the ground cover leaves a site open to faster erosion. On building sites, state law keeps an undisturbed buffer of 25 feet or more along streams classed as trout waters. Our hydroseeding work puts seed and mulch on cleared ground so grass can hold it.

FAQ

Land Clearing Questions, Answered

Common questions about land clearing around Murphy and the rest of the tri-state area. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (828) 342-1467

How much does land clearing cost?
The price starts with the acreage and how thick the growth is. Steep ground and rock slow the work, and stumps and hauling add to it. We look at the land and put the quote in writing. Our guide to land clearing costs per acre in North Carolina covers published market ranges.
Do I need a permit to clear land in North Carolina?
Clearing more than one acre for a house or other building needs an approved erosion and sedimentation control plan. State law has the plan filed at least 30 days before work starts. In Cherokee County, the state reviews the plan, and Macon and Jackson counties run their own programs. Local programs can set a lower line, and Macon County's form asks for a plan at half an acre.
Do you grind stumps or pull them?
We pull them with the excavator. Pulling takes the root ball out with the stump, and we fill the hole back in. The stumps leave in the dump truck with the rest of the debris.
Can you clear the lot and leave some trees standing?
Yes, flag the trees you want to keep before we start. The state's erosion control manual says machines should stay outside the drip line of a saved tree. The drip line is the outer edge of its branches. We clear the brush and small trees outside that line.
What should I do before land clearing starts?
Have a surveyor mark your property lines if they are unclear. Buried utility lines get marked through NC 811, with notice at least three full working days before digging. Private lines go unmarked, so show us the well line, the septic tank and any power line to a barn.
Do you clear land outside Murphy?
Yes, we are based in Murphy, and our land clearing services reach about 100 miles out. That takes in North Carolina towns like Hayesville and Franklin. It also reaches Blue Ridge, Georgia and Copperhill, Tennessee. Call or text (828) 342-1467 to set a time to look at your land.
